Biological Diversity Day – Bishop’s Message

by | May 22, 2023

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Today we celebrate the gift of life and the wonders of creation, as we turn our hearts and minds to a crucial aspect of our world: biological diversity. On this special occasion of Biological Diversity Day, we are called to reflect on the intricate tapestry of life that God has woven on this Earth and to recognize our sacred responsibility to safeguard and preserve it.

In the opening pages of the Bible, we read the account of creation, where God, in His wisdom, brought forth a multitude of living beings. From the tiniest microorganisms to the majestic creatures that roam our lands and swim in our oceans, each and every species has been given a place in the grand symphony of life. The sheer diversity and interdependence of these organisms remind us of the limitless creativity of our Creator.

As modern and contemporary Catholics, we recognize that God’s creation is a precious gift entrusted to our care. We are called to be stewards of the Earth, to protect and nurture the delicate balance that sustains life. Our faith compels us to reject the notion that humans are separate from nature, meant to dominate and exploit it for our own gain. Instead, we are called to recognize our interconnectedness with all living beings, to cherish the intricate web of relationships that sustain the beauty and diversity of life.

Biological diversity, or biodiversity, is a testament to the richness and resilience of God’s creation. Each species, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant, plays a unique role in the intricate web of life. From the mighty forests that provide oxygen and shelter to countless organisms, to the tiny insects that pollinate our crops, every living being has a purpose and contributes to the flourishing of life on Earth.

Yet, tragically, we find ourselves in a time of great ecological crisis. Human activities have led to the loss of countless species, the destruction of habitats, and the disruption of delicate ecosystems. Our pursuit of economic growth and material gain has often come at the expense of the natural world, causing irreparable harm to the planet we call home.

This calls for urgent action and a radical change in our approach. As progressive Catholics, we must advocate for policies and practices that prioritize the preservation and restoration of biological diversity. We must challenge the systems that prioritize profit over the well-being of the Earth and its creatures. We must work towards sustainable development, promoting alternative energy sources, responsible consumption, and the protection of endangered species and habitats.

But our commitment to biodiversity should not end with external actions. It must also be a transformation of our hearts and minds. We must cultivate a deep sense of reverence and awe for the beauty and complexity of the natural world. We must recognize that every act of destruction, every disregard for the sanctity of life, wounds the heart of God and diminishes our own humanity.

On this Biological Diversity Day, let us recommit ourselves to the noble task of protecting and preserving God’s creation. Let us embrace the call to be faithful stewards, recognizing that our own well-being is intimately tied to the health of the planet. Let us strive to live in harmony with nature, honoring and respecting the sacredness of all life.

May our celebration of Biological Diversity Day inspire us to take concrete steps, both individually and collectively, to heal our wounded Earth. Let us pray for the wisdom and courage to be true guardians of creation, and may God’s grace guide us on this sacred journey.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
