Feast of Pentecost – Bishop’s Message

by | May 28, 2023

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

As we gather together on this joyous occasion of the Feast of Pentecost, I am filled with a deep sense of gratitude and hope. The Spirit of God, which descended upon the apostles and disciples so many years ago, continues to empower and guide us in our journey as the Christian Faithful in the year 2023. Today, I wish to reflect on what this feast means for us in the context of our rapidly changing world.

Pentecost, at its core, is a celebration of the transformative power of the Holy Spirit. It is a reminder that God’s presence is not confined to a distant realm but actively moves and dwells within us, urging us to participate in the divine mission of love and justice. The Spirit, often depicted as a flame and a gentle breeze, calls us to embrace our roles as agents of change in a world desperately in need of hope and renewal.

In the year 2023, we find ourselves grappling with numerous challenges—social, political, environmental, and ecclesial. Our world is marked by division, inequality, and a lack of compassion. In the face of these realities, Pentecost beckons us to rise above the noise and confusion, to be bearers of a different message—a message of unity, inclusivity, and solidarity.

Firstly, Pentecost calls us to embrace the diversity of the human family. We live in a world where differences often lead to fear and division. But the Spirit reminds us that our diversity is a gift, not a threat. It is a call to appreciate and celebrate the richness of our unique backgrounds, cultures, and experiences. Let us strive to create communities that are inclusive, where every person, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, or socio-economic status, is welcomed and valued as a beloved child of God.

Secondly, Pentecost compels us to listen deeply and speak prophetically. The Spirit, as it did on that first Pentecost, still speaks to us in our own tongues and languages. It moves us to listen attentively to the marginalized, the oppressed, and the voices that often go unheard. Let us have the courage to be prophetic witnesses in a world longing for justice. May we advocate for the rights and dignity of all, working tirelessly to dismantle systems of oppression and to create a more equitable society.

Thirdly, Pentecost calls us to be instruments of reconciliation and peace. We are living in a time of heightened polarization and conflicts. Our world is scarred by violence, both physical and verbal. But the Spirit impels us to be peacemakers, to build bridges instead of walls. Let us strive to heal the wounds of division, to engage in dialogue, and to seek common ground. Through our actions and words, may we sow seeds of love and understanding, fostering a culture of encounter and solidarity.

Finally, Pentecost invites us to embrace our responsibility as stewards of creation. Our planet is groaning under the weight of ecological devastation. As a modern and aware spiritual people, we recognize that care for the Earth is an essential part of our faith. The Spirit calls us to be advocates for environmental justice, to safeguard the beauty and integrity of God’s creation for future generations.

Dear friends, the Feast of Pentecost holds great relevance for us in the year 2023. It challenges us to be bold and courageous in our witness to the Gospel. Let us open our hearts to the transformative power of the Holy Spirit, allowing it to guide us in our pursuit of a more inclusive, just, and compassionate world.

As we continue our journey, may the Spirit empower us to be instruments of love, unity, and peace. Let us go forth from this celebration of Pentecost, strengthened and renewed, ready to make a difference in our world. Amen.

May the Holy Spirit continue to bless and guide us on our path of faith.
