Celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Month

by | May 10, 2023

Dear brothers and sisters,

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, a time when we celebrate the rich cultural diversity and contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders to our nation and the world. As progressive Catholics, we recognize the spiritual importance of this month and the opportunity it presents to reflect on our call to embrace diversity and promote social justice.

The Catholic Church has a long history of promoting social justice, and one of the most important aspects of this work is the promotion of diversity and inclusion. As followers of Christ, we are called to love our neighbors as ourselves, regardless of their race, ethnicity, or background. We must strive to create a community that is welcoming to all, recognizing that every person is made in the image and likeness of God.

Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have made significant contributions to our society and culture, and we must celebrate and honor these contributions. We must also recognize the challenges that these communities face, including discrimination, marginalization, and violence. As Catholics, we must stand in solidarity with our Asian American and Pacific Islander brothers and sisters, and work towards a more just and equitable society.

The month of May provides an opportunity for us to learn more about the histories, cultures, and experiences of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. We can attend cultural events, read books, and engage in conversations that expand our knowledge and understanding. By doing so, we can break down barriers and build bridges of understanding and respect.

We must also recognize the spiritual importance of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. The Catholic Church is a global community, and we are enriched by the diverse cultures, traditions, and perspectives of our members. By celebrating the contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, we affirm the spiritual value of diversity and the importance of inclusion.

The diversity of our Catholic community is a reflection of the richness and complexity of God’s creation. As we celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, let us embrace our differences and work towards building a more just and equitable world. Let us stand in solidarity with our Asian American and Pacific Islander brothers and sisters, and let us pray for the day when all people are treated with dignity and respect, and when diversity is celebrated as a gift from God.

May the spirit of Christ guide us in our work for justice, inclusion, and equality. Amen.
